A home-based business trade fair will be held Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22 at Park Royal mall. The Economic Development Commission (EDC) is organizing the first home-based business (HBB) trade fair for the North Shore in cooperation with co-spon- sors West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and Park Royal mail. Some 30 HBBs will be displaying their wares and services for mall-goers to appreciate, purchase, or just learn more about what can be done through a HBB. Also on hand will be a number of business resource agencies who can assist with ideas and background on how anyone can open and better operate a HBB or reg- ular business. Who would be interested in coming? Anyone who has a HBB, wants to start a HBB, is interested in turning a hobby into a business or is inter- ested in starting a small business of any nature on the North Shore. Information on North Shore markets, areas, sources of assistance and business networks will be available at the fair. : With Science and Technology Week overlapping Small Business Week. a music technologist show will be taking place in the middle of this display at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21 and J p.m and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. Growth in HBB starts is a provincial and nation- al trend (hat is expected to accelerate. “On the North Shore, unlike other areas in Greater Vancouver, we have the more traditional crafts and goods HBBs, but we also have a large number of HBB business and professional services from desktop pub- lishing to international engineering to software design- ers,” she said. With people’s increasing desire to stay close to home and the downsizing of a variety of industries, opportunities to do contract work is increasing. For many people, using their home as an office is a natural next Move. The EDC in association with the Federal Business Development Bank (FBDB) and the local Canada Employment Centre has been working to develop a more in-depth training program with a focus on HBBs. Purchasers Trade Show While most trade fairs feature businesses interested in selling their goods or services, a show next week will be the reverse, with participants looking to buy services from those who attend.
