The regional district has just released sta- tistics which reveal that the average daily commute is 12% further, 20% longer, and 7.5% slower than it was in the past. According to GVRD’s WHEN TIMES are tough and the economy sags the first things cut from any government budget are the “non-essential” expendi- tures, These often include the sponsorship of sporting or cultural events. The private sector becomes inyolved when government money vanishes, One of the largest contributors is the tobacco industry. Tobacco companies spend an estimated $50 million to support high-profile events tike tennis and golf tournaments, jazz and music festivals and fashion shows as well as fireworks compe- titions. With tobacco's links to cancer, anti-smoking groups ques- tion tobacco company motives as cigarette advertising is no longer allowed in Canada. However, event sponsorship by the companies is allowed because they are promoting o company, not a clyarette brand. Tobacco companies in turn have creuted companies named after cigarette brands — such as Player's Ltd. and Matinee Ltd. — with similar logos, Still, $50 million is a fot of money to cough up — money taxpayers don't have, Should tobacco companies sponsor cultural and sporting events?
