By Anna Marie D’Angelo News Reporter Mark Simon sutfered mild hypothermia and injured his right leg in the incident near De Pencier Bluff. He was transported to Lions Gate Hospital where X-rays revealed severe bruising to his leg. Simon was subsequently discharged Tuesday from hospital on crutches, according to a North Shore Rescue Team (NSRT) spokesman. Foster said a helicopter couldn't be used in the rescue because of poor weather conditions in the area. The three hikers, he said, were walking along a summer alpine trail covered with snow on De Pencier Bluff when one fei at approximately 2 p.m. “The other two followed dawn aad also fell. They were uninjured and were able to come out and summon help,” said Foster. NSRT member and paramedic Tim Jones said the injured man tumbled 300 feet (100 m) down a steep gully and hit a tree with his leg. He was unable to walk as a result of his injury. Jones and another paramedic treated the injured man while waiting for rescuers. . Jones said the treatment involved applying a traction splint to Simon’s leg, giving him mor- phine for pain and treating him for hypothermia. The injured man was taken to hospital at f:15 am. on Tuesday after being pulled fram the gully ina basket stretcher. Foster said the threesome were unequipped for the hike and had traversed in a closed, dan- gerous area of the mountain. The lengthy evacuation involved transporting the injured hiker by sngweat to the Mount Seymour parking lol and then transferring him to a wailing ambulance.
