SPORTS St. Thomas Aquinas finish third in girls’ tournament SINCE ITS inception in 1988, the ‘‘A’’ tournament has provided girls in smail schools around B.C. with an opportunity to compete in a Provincial Girls’ Basketball Championship. This year St. Thomas Aquinas High School (STA), one of the Catholic public schools of the Vancouver Archdiocese, hosted the tournament March 5 to 7. After an opening ceremony featuring-an address by the Arch- bishop of Vancouver, Most Rev- erend Adam Exner, eight basket- ball teams, Brentwood College, Charles Bloom, Credo Cristian, Ron Pettigrew Christian, Pember- ton, STA, Salmo and Queen Charlotte squared off in some ex- tremeiy close and hard—~fought games. Ranked second going into the tournament, STA opened the tournament by easily defeating Queen Charlotte 70-24 but STA suffered a mild upset in semi-final action in a hard-fought 50-52 foss to the eventual champion, Credo Christian. STA then rebounded to take NEWS photo Cindy Goodman third with a 74-61 defeat of Brentwood College. Senior standout and STA player Erin Mackey was named the tour- nament’s first all star. dennifer McGucken, who grad- uates this year, and Jamie Mackey, in Grade 1[0, were selected to the tournament's se- cond all star team. Jamie was also selected as the tournament’s top defensive player. Meanwhile in Sparwood, STA’s senior boys’ basketball team, who are ranked number one in ‘‘A’”’ schools (75 or fewer boys in Grades 11 and 12), captured their first provincial title at the B.C. ““A’?
