GVRD staff reports show dur- ing the past year that the GVRD has received several -acrial harvesting proposals from dif- ferent companies, which would use everything from helicopters to log: the _ sensitive old-growth forested watersheds. One of the proposals came from the North Shore’s Alton anid McFarlane Logging Ltd. Last October, co-owner Paul Alton presented his method before the GVRD's water committee, which oversees watershed activi- ties. His proposal involves - Sifting and carrying fallen jogs along steel cables affixed high .above the forest floor with the help cf cable cars attached to helium balloons. The water committee was told that the advantages of his system included: @ less road-building; @ less disruption of surrounding forest; : ® climinating the need to haul logs across the forest floor, which also: disrupts soil and stasiding trees, Alton said his system is 20% cheaper than helicopter logging, another aerial method, Alton’s reasoning behind his method is simple. “We are loggers too, We'd iike to see some old-growth timber left for our. sons and daughters, There is a midéte ground. We ‘can have our cake and eat it too,” Alton told the North Shore News-in an earlier interview last October.
