Design home escape routes

HUNDREDS OF Canadians
die needlessly in house fires
every year because they had
not planned an escape route
until it was too late.

Fire drills in schools are a fa-
miliar event but sadly not in
homes, where the majority of fires
occur.

The District of North Van-
couver Fire Services urges all fam-
ilies to ‘“‘plan to get out alive’’ by
designing an escape route before
* fire starts.

To start, draw a floor plan of
your complete home showing all
possible. exits. Devise two ways
out of every room, especially
bedrooms.

If one escape route is a window
on the second floor or higher, in-
vest in a safety ladder. If you live
in a highrise, know and practise
two ways out of the building.

If you cannot escape from your
apartment, seal the door out to
the haliway with duct tape, damp
towels or bedding to help keep the

Go to the window or balcony
and wave or hang a brightly col-

ored cloth from it to signal for-

help. Also, phone the fire
department and notify them of
your situation and location.

Remember that elevators are
never to be used as part of an
escape route because they may
become trapped between floors or
actually stop on.the fire floor.

When practising escape plans,
teach everyone to close doors
behind them as they leave.

When a smoke alarm sounds,
toll out of. bed and on to the
floor. Do not stand up or stop for
clothes, papers or jewelry. Crawl

call the fire department from the
home of a neighbor. When the
firefighters arrive, tell them
whether or not everyone is out of
the house.
