Commercial building owners
deny city charges of inaction

Oid Sergio’s Oyster Bar at Third and Lonsdale

THE OWNERS of a com-
mercial building on ‘the
corner of Lonsdale Avenue
and Third Street have
denied charges by North
Vancouver City officials
that nothing has been done
to clean up the site.

The building, which has been
on the northeast corner of Lons-
dale and Third Street since 1972,
housed two nightclubs before it
became Sergio’s Oyster Bar.

boarded-up windows and external
graffiti, thas been described by
North Vancouver City Coun. Bill
Bell as ‘‘an eyesore."’

In a Sept. 11 News story, Fran-
cis Caouette, city administrative
coordinator of development ser-
-vices, said the buiiding’s owners,
Cressey Development Corp., will
appear before city council for a
show-cause hearing to explain
why nothing has been done with
the building.

Caouette said that the building
has sat vacant for several years
and that it has created safety con-
cerns,

Caouette said at the time that
“there’s been no effort on Mr.
Cressey’s part to clean up or make
repairs to the building."

But Cressey spokesman Grant
Gillies said the building has had
tenants for the past 244 years and
that repairs have been made to the
Structure.

He said a band used the build-
ing for practice sessions and that
it is currently being used by Can-
nell Films Lid. as a set for the
television series Street Justice.

(Caouette) sent me a letier, and
I’ve acted on it. They told us ene
month ago there would be a hear-
ing but didn’t give us a date.

“We met with North Shore
Health, and they wanted us to
clean some parts up, and we have
dons that. He (Caouette) said he
would provide me with a list of
some exterior work they want
done, and {'m stiif waiting for
that,”’ said Gillies.

“It’s very minor work."”

He added that the building will
be upgraded and that Cressey has
development plans for the site,
pending approval by city council.

Gillies said he and Caouette met
with Cannell Films last week to
discuss what improvemunts the ci-
ty wants made to the buiding.

“We have the situation under
control. We just want people to
be happy,”’ said Gillies.
