Certain medications, dyes, beauty product ingredients and foods can make you more sen- sitive to the sun. Stay away from petraleum product moisturizers, all perfumes, and do not eat parsnips, carrots, celery, fennel, dill and parsley before going in the sun, recommends Donsky. You may also have a reaction if you are taking drugs which are © antidiabetic agents, antibiotics {such as tetracyclines and griseofulvin), antihistamines, bar- biturates, sulphamides, topical an- tibacterial medication and. hor- mones such as estrogen.. When choosing the right sunscreen for ‘your skin, Donsky recommends using the following Sun Protection Factor (SPF) numbers for your skin type. If you have fair skin which never tans, just burns or freckles, use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and use higher SPF on sensitive areas such as the face. If you have fair skin which tans but also burns, use a sunscreen with SPF 10 along with a higher number on the face. For skin which tans well and only occasionally burns, wear a SPF 6 and a higher number on Plan your THE BEST time to begin planning a wardrobe is at the beginning of the season. As far as colors go, soft pastels of sage, maize, rose and cocoa can be used to work off basics like navy and cream. Fabrics should be chosen with a view towards comfort and low maintenance. Day to Evening Your day look can be revved up for the evening with quick, but _ You couid also sensitive areas. Dark skin which tans well and never burns can use SPF 4. You may notice that European and North American SPF numbering systems vary slightly. The European numbers are highcr and are based on using an average amount of sunscreen for a given time period. A similar SPF screen number is lower in North Ameri- can products based on a generous amount of sunscreen being applied to the skin. If you are just introducing your skin to the sun and have not been exposed this season, do not feel that you can stay out all day even if you have a high SPF on your skin. It is important to gradually in- crease your time in the sun until you show signs of tanning. This allows your skin to get used to the tays and not let you burn. Do not feel that once you have an obvious suntan, you are pro- tected from sun damage. A tan only allows you a certain amount of protection and you still need to ~ wear s..nscreen. You should also be aware that certain popular beliefs concerning the sun are not true. You can burn when you are swimming since the sun can penetrate clear water, And when you are in the shade you can burn since cther surfaces can reflect the rays onto your skin even when you're not sitting directly in sun. — Carol Crenna wardrobe noticeable changes.
