HE CAULFEILD Village shopping centre offers an oasis of informality in the starched collar and dinner jacket elevations of upper West Vancouver. For a cup o’ jae and light con- versation, there is the Caulfeild Village Starbucks outlet; for a half dozen oysters and a glass of chili- ed chablis there is Caichy’s oyster bar; and for a slice of New York Italian culinary informality there is Pastameli. All those looking to foosen old school ties and shed club blazers could happily make an evening of it in the Village, but be forewarn- ed, the lights go oul early in West Vancouver. Most doors were being locked and bolted as the clock struck 9 p.m. the night Table Hopping toured the Village. But prior to that, we enjoyed the hospitality and hearty cuisine that has established Pastameli as a Caulfeild neighborhood fixture over the past four years. Pastameli has a good natural feel to it: its staff is young and eager: its kitchen is open and active; and its food is hearty and vigorous. The focus of the restaurant’s menu is italian fast food: pizza ($6 to $17) and pasta ($6.50 to $9.95). But there is also a selection of hamburgers, sandwiches and larger meat-based entrees. Vegetarian options, too, are featured prominently. Pastameli has a split personality. Its front end is a deli and pasta shop with a takeout window; its back end is an informal bistro-style dining room and art gallery. The unifying character of both halves of the Pastameli persona is an unpretentious neighborliness that can accommodate a track- suited lawyer and his clan while whipping out a half dozen pizzas to go. Pastameli offers a concise selec- tion of wine ($10 to $16) and beer ($3.25 to $4.50). A Bardolino Bolla ($14.95) set the stage for our meal with its robust italian red character. | tried a Minestrone soup ($3.95) to take the chill off the humorous monsoon downpour and crisp mountain air of summer on the North Shore.
