WY student selected for New York program WEST VANCOUVER Secondary School student Christopher Jones has been selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy’s science honors research program at ihe Brookhaven National Lab- oratory in Upton, New York this summer. By PATRICK RAYNARD Contributing Writer Jones, 17, who will graduate from WVSS this month, is one of only seven highschool students from across Canada who have been selected from a list of almost 200 applicants. And Jones is the only student chosen from Western Canada. “This is a tremendous honor for Christopher,’’ school superin- tendent Doug Player told Mon- day’s West Vancouver School Board meeting. Player added that the program was very difficult to get into. Jean’ Ferguson, chairman of the school board, said that Jones was “fone of an impressive list of stu- dents.” Jones told the News he felt privileged to be once of only seven Canadian students chosen, and that it will be a good opportunity to learn a lot about his favorite subject, physics. ‘“‘My school has been very sup- portive,”’ Jones said. ‘‘The science teachers at West Van have been a terrific help.’’ The two-week summer program, whose Canadian entries are co- ordinated by Toronto's Canadian Centre for Creative Technology, brings together top science stu- dents from the economic summit nations, the centre’s Dr. Thomas Bryant said in a letter to the West Vaacouver trustees. “The program's primary pur- pose is to encourage young people to pursue careers in science and engineering,’’ Bryant wrote, poin- ting out that four of the seven Canadian paricipants this year are women. Brookhaven, where Jones will work from July 23 to Aug. 7, is the site of the National Syn- chrotron Light Source, the world’s brightest source of X and vacuum ultraviolet radiation. With his fellow students, Jones will perform experiments on NSLS beam lines, and will be required to give oral presentations and labo- ratory reports.
