Daycare move goes to hearing

THE CONTENTIOUS issues of
the need for more daycare facili-
ties and the need for more parking
in West Vancouver’s commercial
areas will be the focus of an April
15 public hearing at West Van-
couver municipal hali.

A daycare centre is currently
being run in a house on municipal
property at 2478/84 Haywood
Avenue. But West Vancouver
District Council is considering
selling the property to the owner
of an adjacent lot for develop-
ment of a three-storey apartment
building and more public parking
for the Dundarave area.

have to be rezoned from single-
family residential to commercial
use.

Public concern was raised over
the development last year, because
the development would force the
daycare centre to move to a dif-
ferent house purchased by the
municipality.

“We are currently subsidizing a
daycare operation by having it in
one of our buildings,”’ Ald. Andre
Danyliu, pointing out that people
in other areas of the municipality
might object to that or might ex-
pect similar treatment.

“‘We'd be interested in hearing
citizens speak on that subject at
the hearing,’’ said Danyliu.

A PROPOSAL to repeal the golf
course zone in place for ihe
defeated Cypress Ridge golf
course in West Vancouver will go
to public hearing on April 8.

If the bylaw proceeds, the 350-
acre municipal site in the Cypress
Ridge area will revert to general
community use.

The land, which had been ear-
marked for golf course develop-
ment, contains some rare old-
growth trees.

Public outcry over the threat to
the trees and objections to the use
of the land as a golf course led
council to abandon the idea fol-
lowing a referendum held last
November.

A committee is reviewing uscs
for the area.
