Criminal bill

Campbell was correct in stating
that the abortion issue will never be
solved to everyone’s liking.

But both sides in the abortion debate
were appalled when the Tories passed
their flawed bill in the House of Com-
mons this week.

Bill C-43, an amendment to the Crim-
inal Code, would allow a woman to seek
an abortion if her doctor decides that
continuing to carry the fetus threatens
her physical or psychological well-being.

If a woman lies about her condition,
the legislation dictates that she could be
jailed for two years. And the physician
who performed the abortion could face
similiar criminal prosecution.

against women, it denies them fair access

to abortion because significantly fewer
doctors will be willing to perform the
operation under the conditions created
by the new bill.

Bill C-43 is also a slap in the face to
those opposing abortion because it fails
to deal adequately with fetus rights. The
legisiation permits abortions at any stage
of pregnancy, which anti-abortionists
argue is tantamount to abortion on de-
mand.

Foz most women, abortion is perhaps
the most difficult decision they will ever
make. A bill that would make criminals
out of women facing such a decision is
nothing short of ludicrous.

In drafting an abortion bill designed to
satisfy everyone, the Tory government
has instead come up with a bill that
satisfies no one.

ugly Canucks!

THERE IS a new menace afoot in New York City. Accord-
ing to local press reports, these foreigners are taking over
the Big Apple in a truly frightening manner.

They own more than 21.5 mil-
lion square feet of Gotham office
space, and their investments in the
United States have multiplied by a
factor of seven in the last decade
alone.

They are insidious, moreover.
According to the unhappy Ameri-
cans, they are virtually impossible
to distinguish from ordinary U.S.
citizens, except, perhaps, that they
are a bit more polite than the
average inhabitant of New York
City.

Who are these people anyway?
Are they Japanese? No, they are
Canadians, that’s who.

Particularly objectionable to the
denizens of New York is the fact
that these northern imperialists
have taken an important position
in the cultural life of the city. To
wit, the Toronto-based Garth
Drabinsky is the owner of the
Cineplex Odeon movie chain. With
28 screens in Manhattan, it com-
prises, along with Loews, the larg-
est presence in the local industry.

But taking over is not enough.
To add insult to injury, Cineplex
Qdeon has raised its ticket prices
to a hefty $7 U.S. Further, they
have, in the words of a city council
snember, imposed on their cus-
tomers ‘‘the added degradation of
having to sit through a paid com-
mevcial,’’ usually a Diet Coke ad.

As a result, this Canadian firm
has become wildly unpopular. It
has been given a ‘“‘Scrooge
Award’’ at numerous
neighborhood protest meetings.
The company, moreover, has been
called ‘*Cine Bucks’? and
“‘Cineplex Odious’’ in the popular
press, and has been accused of try-
ing to monopolize movie theatres

Given the protectionist senti-
ment now sweeping through the
country to the south of us —

potential Democratic Party
presidential candidates such as
Richard Gephardt would appear to
be running on a ‘‘bash foreigners’’
platform — it would be no big
surprise to see these Canadian in-
vestors in U.S. real estate tossed
out on their ears if George Bush
loses the next U.S. election.

Luckily, however, there is a bi-
lateral free trade treaty in effect
between the two continental
neighbors. Not only will this tend
to safeguard present investments
made south of the border, it will
continue to open up to us a gigan-
tic market of over 250 million
potentially avid consumers.

But the ‘‘Economic Na-
tionalists’’ in Canada are still
whining about the Free Trade
Agreement. Mel Hurtig and many
of his soul mates in the New Dem-
ocratic and Liberal Parties would
like nothing better than to “‘rip
up’’ the agreement, and plunge us
back into economic solipsism.

If there were any justice in the
world, instead of whining about
Americans ‘“‘having access to our
resources,’’ we would be holding
ticker tape parades in honor of the
people who have brought us closer
to economic integration with the
Americans.

Without their heroic efforts,
Canadian investors in American
real estate and industry would risk
being tossed out on their ears. And
this is to say nothing of all the jobs
and wealth created in our export
industries — which depend upon
the purchases of our neighbors to
the south.
