inquiring reporter Elizabeth Collings ee 12 ~- Sunday, Merch 18, 1990 - North Shore News THE FEDERAL government has finally agreed to permit Sikh RCMP officers to wear turbans with their uniforms. Solicitor General Pierre Cadieux announced the decision Thursday after almost a year of deliberation. At issue for many opponents was the traditional RCMP uniform, long a symbol! of Canadian tradition. People argue that Vered Cohen West Vancouver If it’s only just a few Sikh officers, I don’t really see what’s the big deal. I think the whole issue has been over-inflated. Andrew Haight Terrace, B.C. I don’t agree. The RCMP have a designated uniform that’s recognized all over Canada. A bunch of people with different colored hats just doesn't look right. they of them. W. Van doctor fumes over LGH smokers’ lounge plan A WEST Vancouver doctor is fuming over Lions Gate Hospital plans to spend $25,000 on building a smokers’ lounge. “At a time of restraint, when there’s not encugh money for health care, Lions Gate seems to be spending money on_ health destruction,’’ Dr. Rodney Glynn-Morris said. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter But LGH president Bob Smith defended the policy, saying it was hecessary to find a place for smokers so visitors to the hospital wouldn’t have to “‘run the gantlet”’ of smokers presently outside the hospital’s main entrance. “The facility is a permanent ad- dition to the building and it will be used in the short term to re-deploy both the (smoking) staff and visitors from the main entrance,”’ Smith said. Smoking has been progressively restricted at LGH since 1986. A year ago it was banned completely inside the hospital. Since then smokers have been forced to go outside for a ciga- rette. The smokers’ lounge will be a glass-enclosed balcony off the caf- eteria above the emergency room. Smith said the addition will be finished by the end of next week. Glynn-Morris said the expen- diture was a ‘‘totally inappropri- ate’’ use of health-care money, adding that whether the money came from government funding or from private gifts is irrelevant. In fact, funding for the addition comes from two sources: money LGH got from a movie company that filmed there and the hospital's capital reserves. Glynn-Morris said it was ironic that LGH was spending the money on smokers just after LGH ad- ministrators attended a Heart Health Forum in February at which the keynote speaker was an anti-smoking lobbyist from Ot- tawa, “They could spend it on much more worthwhile things. It does seem very curious,’’ Glynn-Morris added. However, Smith said other hos- pitals had encountered the same problem, adding that LGH could only go so far in legislating the behavior of others. “7 think a hospital should try to show health leadership in alt aspects,"’ he said. ‘‘On the other hand, we are not empowered to be our brother’s keepers. It should be purchased without fail every time your motor vehicle insurance is renewed. UMP coverage basically provides that if you or a member or your family is injured in a motor vehicle accident either in Canada or the United States, and the insurance of the party at fault for the accident is insufficient to cover your damage claim, UMP coverage will make up the deficiency between your total claim and the amount of insurance ava:‘able. In British Columbia, a motorist is only required by law to purchase $200,000.00 of third party liability coverage. In parts of the 'Inited States, that mandatory coverage is much lower. It would be tragic to have a legitimate claim for damages not paid because the amount of available insurance was insuf- ficient. With UMP coverage, 1.C.B.C. will pay your claim to the limits of your own third party liability insurance. It is therefore recommended that each motorist check his 1.C.B.C. policy to ensure that the UMP coverage has been selected. The cost to purchase UMP is minimal, and the pro- tection afforded substantial.
