Supporters say the route to Vancouver would help divert much of the bridge traf- fic and encourage people to leave their cars at home. But opponents of the idea say the proposal is largely hypo- thetical at this point because BC Transit is still studying a Coquitlam link. THE NORTH Shore's much lamented traffic congestion problem has met with a series of wild and wonderful proposals recently. The latest idea is the possibility in the distant future of extending SkyTrain to create a third crossing (o the North Shore by going under the Second Narrows Bridge from the PNE. The line would go through a tunnel under Burrard Inlet, then follow North Do you want SkyTrain on North Shore? inquiring reporter Elizabeth Collings Dave Kiraly North Vancouver tt would be a good idea. It’s hard to get out to Coquitlam sometimes by bus. Having to go over a bridge is such a hassle. Mike Spider Coquitlam I think it’s a great idea. It would save on gasoline, rush hour, all those bad things that happen in the morning on the way to work. I'd take it. Margaret Millar North Vancouver I's a great idea. The traffic is so heavy on those two bridges. We certainly need another crossing of some sort. Vancouver Wharves upgrading to the tune of $30 million ONE YEAR into a 20-year con- tract it has with the giant lead and zinc producer, Cominco Ltd., Vancouver Wharves Ltd. is undergoing a $30-million upgrade and expansion of its North Van- couver port facility in order to ac- commodate close to 400-million tonnes of lead-zinc concentrates currently being removed from the Cominco-owned Red Dog mine in northern Alaska. By SURJ RATTAN Once the minerals from the Red Dog mine are extracted, they are loaded into barges and then brought to Vancouver Wharves’ North Vancouver facility. But both Cominco and Van- couver Wharves have to work fast in getting the product out of the mine and down to North Van- couver because the Red Dog mine is iced-in nine months of the year. The only time the mine is not surrounded by ice is from July to September. Once in North Vancouver, the cargo is then loaded on to rail cars and shipped to Cominco’s lead and zinc smelter in Trail, B.C. John MacKay, Vancouver Wharves executive vice-president and chief operating officer, said the company is now spending $30 million to provide receiving and transmitting facilities for the Com- inco product. The company started the upgrading one year ago and ex- pects to have the project finished in July, just in time for the lead- zinc concentrates to begin being shipped from Alaska to North Vancouver. The upgrading project includes extending the company’s dock by 160 feet, building a ship unloader and providing a shipment facility to move the product from North Vancouver to Trail. MacKay said during the course of the upgrading project, the com- pany also managed to clean up a small part of Burrard Inlet. **We've dredged our berth depth from 36 feet to 46 feet and in the process of doing that we’ve managed to remove 3 substantial amount of contaminants that have accumulated over the years in the harbor bottom,"’ said MacKay.
