1 Wax artistically BATIK WORKSHOPS OFFERED LOCALLY WHY DON'T you learn to wax ar- tistically in 1990? North Vancouver batik artist Lisa Dowding will be glad to show you how. Dowding will be teaching a variety of one-day batik workshops and ongoing batik classes on the North Shore in the new year. Students will learn the history, techniques and theory of batik as well as get a chance to explore in the medium themselves. ‘*T think learning by doing is the best process,’ Dowding said. “Batik is instant gratification. In an afternoon you can have some- thing really neat to take home with you.” The classes are for all levels, from beginners tc the experienced. Students will be provided with 18°°X 18°’ squares of cloth and all other necessary materials. “I'd really like to stress it's for everyone. It's a really fun pro- cess,"’ she said. She’s called some of the workshops Batik For the Hopelessly Unartistic to prove the point. Dowding will be teaching workshops at the West Vancouver Recreation Centre for kids on Jan. 14 and for adults on Jan. 18. Other workshops scheduled in- clude March {7 at RecCentre Ron Andrews, March 10 at Eagle Har- bour Community Centre and Feb. 7, 14 and 21 in the community wing of Seycove Community School. In addition, there will be a six- week course at the West Van- couver Seniors Centre and one-day workshops at the North Shore Neighbourhood House and Carson Graham.
