AU TO mM OF I 45 - Friday, October 27, 1989 - North Shore News vy E—-S San Francisco visitors were lucky to have comprehensive insurance AT LEAST two B.C. motorists are happy they chose to include comprehensive coverage in their Autoplan insurance. The twe had driven to California and were in San Francisco when last week’s disastrous earthquake struck. Both vehicles were dam- aged by falling debris. One suffered some broken glass and dents while the other sustained more serious dam- age when a chimney collaps- ed on it. Fortunately, neither imotorist was injured. Both drivers will pay a deductible and their vehicles will be repaired. As with all comprehensive claims, there will be no toss of discount on the Claim-Rated Scale. Over 76 per cent of B.C. motorists purchase com- prehensive insurance to pro- tect their vehicles from a variety of perils. The coverage fives up to its name. Subject to the deductible chosen, comprehensive coverage will pay to repair the damage done to your vehicle by fire, theft or at- tempted theft, vandalism, windstorm, hail, explosion, lightning, floods, falling air- craft, falling or flying ob- jects, impacts with animals and, of course, earthquakes. While damage fiom ear- thquakes is pretty rare, comprehensive claims are not. Last year alone, over 257,000 comprehensive claims were reported to ICBC. That represented nearly 40 per cent of the total claims for the year. The most common com- prehensive claim involves rock damage to windshields. While most windshields need to be replaced, many, especially those with a “‘star’’ chip can be repaired if they are attended to before a crack develops. ICBC will pay for windshield repairs and the motorist is not charged the normal deducti- ble. The most unusual com- prehensive claims last year involved the 22 vehicles that fell through the roof of the Save-On-Foods building at Station Scuare in Burnaby. All but one motorist had comprehcssive coverage and their vehicles were cither repaired or written-off. The yaost worrisome comprehensive claim trend involves the ever-growing number of vandalisms and thefts. in the first half of this year, ICBC paid out over $8 million to compen- sate moiorists whose vehicles UNICEF makes vear-round gift giving easy. | | unicel | - 7 were stolen. Theft of equipment permanently at- tached to vehicles (not in- cluding radar detectors) ac- counted for another $8 mil- lion. General insurers provide coverage for personal effects stolen from vehicles, such as cameras and clo.hing. This includes damage to your tires, unless it is done by fire, theft or van- dalism. Also not covered is any part of the vehicle damaged dus to mechanical breakdown, rust and corro- sion or regular wear and tear. For instance, if your car catches fire, comprehen- sive insurance will pay to repair or replace the dam- aged porticn of your vehicle except for the part that 1989 ES caused the fire. Freezing or explosion within the engine’s ce:nbus- tion chamber is alse not covered unless it is caused by fire, theft or vandalism, or is coincidental with other loss or damage.
