The evidence is at Park Royal this weck. For 12 days starting Wednesday the British Consul General, in con- junction with resident Park Royal pros like Hugh Addison and Per Danielsen, is staging one of the biggest sales promotion extrava- ganzas ever in these parts. It's called ‘‘Great Britain Great Event"? and about the only things missing from this massive boos? for British imports are the Con- corde and the Queen in person (even Brian has his limits). Among the highlights are two genuine London bobbies, superb scale models of Buckingham Pal- ace and Big Ben, a 2,245 kg Rolls Royce balanced on four Wedgwood teacups, demonstra-~ tions by a ceramic artist painting CO-PRODUCER ...Consui Genera! Watkins. 1 HE SAVING of human lives on a dangerous stretch of the Squamish highway must take &. precedence over the bureaucratic bafflegab cur- rently being practised by the provincial government. Motorists travelling from the Village of Lions Bay must currently merge on to the highway where two southbound janes also meet. This merger of three lanes into one, at a point where the highway traffic is often travelling at breakneck speed, has proved foolhardy. This is weil attested to, not only by Lions Bay resi- dents who can regularly hear the screeching of brakes, but by ominous black skid marks and scrapes that scar the otherwise new pavement and cement lane dividers. Although village council has petitioned the highways department to either lengthen the Lions Bay south- bound acceleration lane as originally planned, or to Royal Doulton figurines and a rep- lica of Twining's 13%-gallon Giant Teapot — the world’s biggest. There are Fortnum & Mason afternoon teas daily at all three department stores, British fashion shows, the internationally renown- ed Welsh pipe band Mabsant, Morris dancers, Scottish pipe bands, musical puppets and British sights, sounds and goods of every kind galore. Plus 10 prize draws of merchant gift packages every day and a final grand prize of a luxury all-paid trip to Britain worth around $10,000. Fittingly, the show will be open- ed Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 10:30 a.m. in the South Mall by a ceal- life knight — Canada’s current top OPENING KNIGHT ...Sir Alan Urwick. reduce the four-lane traffic to two lanes, the governm- ent continues to ‘‘look into the matter’? and remains vague as to when the budget will allow such work to be undertaken. Budgetary constraints notwithstanding, this is an inadequate response to a situation of this magnitude. The Squamish highway already claims more lives than any other highway is British Columbia. Are more fatal accidents required before the pov- ernment decides to put people before money? Brit, Sir Alan Urwick, the U.K. High Commissioner. For J2 whole days the North Shore’s many ex-Brits will be able to wallow in nostalgia. Other ethnics and native-born Canadians may at last get to figure out what makes Brits tick. And if any of them haven't at least one item of British merchandise on their next VISA bill, it won't be Brian Watkins’ fault!
