What absolute hypocrisy! Here we have Ald. Crist criti- cizing the provincial government for their ‘‘monstrous behavior’ toward unions and municipalities and comparing the premier with Attila the Hun. In our own district, however, we Enforce Dear Editor: At a recent public hearing there was vociferous opposition by those with obvious vested interests to the North Vancouver District Coun- cil’s recent bylaw concerning regu- lation of illegal suites. This is not quite such a burning issue as far as most North Vancouver resi.ients are concerned, so they do not at- tend meetings and are not heard even though most are generally supportive of council's initiatives. Most people do not abuse zon- ing restrictions and expect their neighbors to do the same. I do not think anyone can dispute that WINDOWS and PATIO DOORS 7 Year transferabie warranty (on full house orders) NATIONAL 20350 Langley have Crist and Baker leading the local council, by their collective noses, in sweeping powers to ban iNegal suites regardless of social and moral consequences. Mr. Crist intends to forbid the less fortunate from subsidizing mortgage payments through rental income, effectively excluding many from home ownership. He likewise is about to turf out others scrapine by with affordable rents. Instead of introducing fair and reasonable bylaws, as in other cit- ies and municipalities, this council is ramming through police-state powers, lashing out at low-income earners. The current council will go down in local history as having been the first municipal government in Canada to introduce jackboot oolicies tu the local scene. I sincerely hope Crist etc. will be the suite bylaw owners of homes where there are illegal suites do not pay their fair share of taxes and in many in- stances the homes have a detrimental effect on the neighborhood. There may be instances where economic hardship occurs if these suites are banned, but |! doubt there are that many, especially as the bylaw appears to provide quite generous transitional provisions. However, even in these instances it would be most unfair on those that do not choose to disregard municipaj regulations and have ac- cepted alternative housing. Enough time has been spent on it and now district staff should start enforcing the new regulations. J.K. Gosden North Vancouver Chatter DAVE COLES lf Pat Quins, finds it difficult to sell ex- pensive seats at Canucks’ games. perhaps he might summon the ghost of Bill Veeck. Veeck, late president o! the St Louis Browns, Cleveland indians and Chicago White Sox, did more at the gate with less product than any hustler in baseball history. Let us adapt severs! oi Veeck's strategies to the Canucks. (1) Hiring a player whose physical characteristics render him (or her) able to deal with one aspect of the game. Short people are difficult to pitch to in baseball. So, Veeck hired 3'7" Eddie Gaedel. Gaedel walked. The Canucks could hire a curvaceous figure skater on the premise that their op- ponents would be too chivalrous or distracted to check her. Or, the team could hire a 6'B" behemoth whose sole job would be that of destroying opponents. (2) Hire a veteran of Segendary proportions Veeck hired Satchel Paige who, as a forty-three (or forty-eight) year old rookie temained a fine pitcher. Incidentally, he set attendance records whenever he pitched. So. the Canucks could hire a legend -- Eddie Shack, Howie Young or Frank Mahovolich. (3) Hold Contests, Heer Case stacking contests or wrest ing matches might be popular during in- termissions. Winners could be haited as "draft" picks. (4) Encourage Fan Participation. One day in 1951, St. Louis Browns’ fans did indeed manage the team. As the regular manager seciined in a rocking chair smoking a pipe, the fans chose the starting lineup, made pitching changes and other decisions -- all by popular vote. The Browns won that game! (5) Incendiary Devices. Veeck popularized exploding scorebcards. What Pat Quinn could do with this | leave 10 your imagination In Chicago and Cleveland Veeck's stunts were icing on a good cake. In St. Louis the Browns’ organization was rot- ten. Veeck’s stunis merely hid the worm briefly. The leam left St. Louis. Ht i$ to be hoped thet Pat Quinn does nat need to resort to any wild stunts to gel fans into the Canucks’ high priced seats. Hopefully the team -- playing solid hockey as a team -- will do this for him. With Quinn's record, in time they snouid. Sales gimmicks have been with us for many years.
