Spring can be
hard on back

SPRING IS here and a lot of peo-
ple can hardly wait to get out to
their gardens.

For after a long winter indoors,
with not much physical activity, a
rush to answer the call of spring
could be very harmful.

Every year chirypractors have to
treat many gardening and hobby
enthusiasts who injure themselves
early in the season, so the B.C.
Chiropractic Association offers
these dos and don'ts before you
start digging:

© Prepare for any physical exer-
cise with a few minutes of stret-
ching leg, arm-and back muscles.
The same routine ‘is also. useful
after work. _

© Wear proper clothing that will
keep you warm but not hot. Make
sure your back is covered and. shirt
tucked in. ‘

e.Don’t take on too much too
soon.‘ Start off with the little jobs
_ and work yourself into condition.
© Don’t remain bent or stooped

pulling while bent over.

2 When weeding, get down on
all fours, or kneel, using one knee
at a time and changing frequently.

¢ Switch hands frequently when
raking, hoeing or shovelling. This
distributes the load evenly instead
of putting all the effort on one side
of the body.

© Use your legs, not your back,
to take the strain when shovelling
or lifting:

e If joint or muscle soreness oc-
curs, take a break. An icepack ap-
plied to the affected area every 15
minutes can be helpful. If the con-
dition continues, or you experience
severe pain in your back, see your
family chiropractor at once.

Low back pain afflicts up to 30
per cent of the population at any
given time. The 365 members of
the B.C. Chiropractic Association
treat 322,000 people every year.
