A recent study suggests about 15
per cent of British Columbians are
involved in local government in
some capacity, often on a volun-
teer basis. That means about
500,000 people, working on
everything from planning commis-
sions to organizing minor league
baseball — people who take the
time and make a commitment to
their community.
Local government is also a big
business. Throughout British Coi-
umbia, municipalities spend a total
of approximately $2 billion and
employ some 30,000 people to
provide the services required by
communities.
