situations associated with smoking.

Light smokers, say the registered
nurses, may be able to quit by
gradually tapering off cigarettes
rather than quitting cold turkey.
This is a method widely used by
kick-it clinics.

The first step in the tapering off
process is to record every cigarette
smoked for several days including
the time and place and activity go-
ing on while smoking.

As a smoking patterns emerges it
will be possible to identify the
times when smoking is most fre-
quent, such as after a meal or
while talking on the telephone.

The cigarettes that are easiest to
eliminate are cut out first. Then,
those that are hardest to do
without are removed from the dai-
ly schedule.

While tapering off, it is impor-
tant to carry only a few cigarettes
with you each day in order to resist
smoking too much. Buying only
one pack at a time and cutting the
package in half will help.

Heavy smokers have the best
success quitting cold turkey, says
the RNABC. There will be
withdrawal symptoms that people
should be aware of but they are
actuallly signs of recovery.

Among the common reactions to
stopping smoking are irritability, a
sore throat, perspiring more, it-
chiness, irregularity, thirst, and
feeling drowsy, achy or “‘spaced
out.”

In the first few days after quit-
ting smoking, former routines
connected with the habit should be
changed if possible.

An increase in outdoor physical
activity is advised for a sense of
healthy well-being.
