56 - Friday, December 13, 1985 - North Shore News The importance of pretending ; OUR CHILDREN’s life consists primarily of their play. For them, it takes the same daily im- portance as our work does for us parents. Pretending or role-playing are the most significant parts of that play. The other one is put-together. When our children pre- tend, they are taking pieces of their real life, combined with their endless imagina- tion, and recreating their own set of conditions for their play. In fact, this serves an im- portant psychological vehicle for them, since it allows them to learn to cope with real life by learning to deal with the similar situations which they make up for themselves, as they act out endless scenarios of make- believe. The play materials’ which help to enhance and provide such pretend play are varied. They include puppets, doll corner and miniature house-keeping equipment, and sets of miniature figures (animals, people, vehicles, Noah's Ark sets, etc.). Construction sets also help to provide the setting for pretend play, allowing children to create their own play environment in which they can then use the same Another aspect to consider is the realism of the figures. The more abstract or car- toony the figure, the more difficult it can be to truly imagine the pretend which the figure is being involved in. If the child is young, it’s by Pat Gallaher imaginative creativity to create their own make- believe play. One thing to watch for when choosing such materi- als is the sturdiness, since children’s eager hands will put well-loved figures through hours upon hours of strenuous activity. Christmas Special = ot necessary to the keep size of such play figures big enough that they could not cause choking, since many children under two years old are still exploring the world with their taste, in addition to their other senses. The younger the child, the foggier the line is between reality and the world of pre- tend, That’s why so many kids bring their stuffed bear (or other favorite friend) to snack or mealtime, to share in the social part of the oc- casion. As the ones who provide the materials and supportive atmosphere for such play, ‘u's necessary for us to carefully consider how open we are, as parents, to the parts of such pretend that our children choose to share with us. If we make little of such aspects of their life, we are indicating that what's im- portant to them isn’t to us. So why should we be other- wise surprised when they, at other times, lack respect for our priorities in daily life? The alternatives and direc- tions in which our children can take and expand their pretend play are only as limited as their endless imag- ination. The only bounds on such imagination are usually determined by the support (AE AE AE US BS AP AS QP aE fe fe WE RE OE Oe BE GE WS HS RE Christmas Combo Buy a cultured Douglas Fir tree 6" or larger # and receive 1 Ib. of § Quality shrimp meat Free a (valued at $8.99 Ib.) or ¥ Buy a minimum of . $20.00 of seafood and receive $5.00 of the purchase of your Christmas tree at CAPTAIN'S CATCH 2065 Dollarton Hwy.
