Well, almost. Two months ago, he decided he would leave SFU, (his duties end next September), to devote his time to wood sculpture. In the two months he has had pieces exhibited in three major American galleries — the Rolly Micheaux in New York and Boston, and now the Wolf Schulz Gallery of - San Fransicso. His distinguished academ- ic career began in 1952. Pro- fessor Gibbons, now $4, received a Doctorate of Education from Harvard in 1969, and has published 60 articles and six books in the field of education. One piece, Walkabout appeared in the prestigious Phi Delta Cappan magazine in 1974, and to date has been the most requested reprint in the magazine’s 60 year his- tory. He discovered wood sculptur. puely by accident: “T was sitting on a beach on Saitsniiug Isiand in 1965"" he recaiis, ‘“‘watching my kids paddle, when I picked up a piece of driftwood. I finished it, sanded and oiled it and ft had my first sculpture — Saltspring Madonna."’ Since then Maurice Gib- bons has never been far away from sculpture, although he has travelled far to master it. He worked under a master carver in Bali, and carved with the Makonde tribe in Dar es Salaam. He studied with a sculptor in Brussels and London in 1974, and in 1976 travelled to Australia. “wanted to exhibit in Bonythen's, the best gallery in Australia,"’ he recounted, “but there was a two year waiting list. The next day there was a cancellation and I had a week to get some pieces ready. | found a fellow-sculptor, tools and beautiful wood ~ Pacific Rose Mahagony and Your ole sneakers are worth five bucks! The years of training and experience lead me to one conclusion — the best education is the one where you teach yourself. See Sculptor Your old runners are worth #52° towards purchase of anew pair.
