18 - Wednesday, June 26, 1985 - North Shore News GALE FORCE WINDS of up to 60 knots and dangerous seas swelling to 10 feet forced post- ponement of Sunday's North Shore News Sailing Race. “There was really no alternative. Any responsible seaman must put safety above all other considera- tions, and the conditions on Sunday were not only un- safe, but downright danger- ous,"’ said Brian Morse, of the Sea Wing Sailing School, co-sponsor of the annual event. BOB GRAHAM Marketing Director - He selayed his concerns to News marketing director Bob Graham who contacted radio station CHQM and asked to broadcast a cancellation notice to the 82 race entrants. Graham con- tacted QM shortly after 7 a.m. and the message was aired several times in the next hour, in an attempt to reach as many racers as possible. By unfortunate coin- cidence, there was difficulty reaching the radio station because of technical pro- blems with their telephone system. About half an hour after Graham first began calling the QM newsroom, he finally got through. Many skippers were in touch with Morse later Sun- day morning and praised the sponsors’ immediate deci- sion to postpone the race. “The race committee showed its maturity in put- ting safety above all other considerations and factors - especially in light of developments later in the day when numerous rescue operations were carried out by the Coast Guard," said Morse, a veteran yachtsman and sailing insfructor. The race has been ten- tatively rescheduled for Sunday, July 14 pending confirmation from two to three suppliers. Graham is already rescheduling the auditorium, caterers and entertainment for the re-running of the race. Captain Richard Oliphant, Port of Vancouver harbor master, has given the official ckay for the July 14 date. Graham said it is his hope ali 82 original entries will be able to race. “This will also give those who did not regis- ter for the race a chance to do so,”” he said. Those who registered for the race but will not be able to participate in the race on the new date, will have the $25 admission fee refunded, Graham said. New entries for the race are being accepted at Sea .Wing Sailing School, 1818 Maritime Mews, Granville Istand. Graham emphasized the race will be exactly the same as previously scheduled ex- cept for the date change. The race will begin at 10 a.m. at Dundarave Pier and ends at 3 p.m. off the Kit- silano Yacht Club. Awards and a party to follow are at Sea Wing Sailing Club. The weather was blamed for several incidents on the water Sunday including the flipping of a float plane. The plane flipped while attempting to Iand in Coal Harbor. Pilot Jerry Sump- ton, 34, of Burnaby, his son Oliver, 3, and father Charles, 73, were uninjured in the incident. They were pulled from the harbor by Vancouver harbor police. The Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria said the centre was called to respond to 31 incidents in 24 hours. B.C.A.A. APPROVED - A.R.A.
