A requisite of the course 1s that all students par. ticipatng in Mclaren’s CR 12 program must put in 20 hours of volunteer work in order to obtain credit for the course Mclaren says the up coming traming sessions are an expansion over last year’s training program which featured only one workshop Uhis year’s program wall feature traine professionals, with Paul Bouchard of the North Vancouver bare Hall con ducting the First Aid program, Holly Turner, the program director oat the North blouse ship Shore Neighborhood running the program, and Ann Finlay, a pbystotherapast with the North Shore fealth Department L cade: PUPPETS PROMOTE Positive attitudes KIDS ON THE BLOCK ts a group of children that look like most other children, except for one difference: they are puppets. ‘ The forty inch hand- and-rod puppets act out skits about children with disabilities in an attempt to promote positive attitudes towards disabled persons, illustrating their abilities and needs. The skits feature two characters, one with a disability and one without. Some of the topics dealt with include mental! retardation, learning disorders and blindness. The dialogue be- tween the disabled child and the normal child gives an insight into the tender feel- ings and difficulties’ handi- capped children experience. The show is available to grades three to seven and is shown pmmarily in schools, but Brownie or Cub groups and seniors and adult groups can also book performances. After each skit, there is a Westlynn Mall question period for anyone wanting further information. Kids on the Block puppet shows are operated by the Kinsmen Rehabilitation Foundation through their Public Awareness Department, co-ordinated by Donna Oates.
