TO MAKE ‘NICE AS POSSIBLE’

B.C. RAIL IS more than half-way through a
program of improving rail passenger service from
its North Vancouver terminal to areas in the In-

terior of the province.

And while vice-president
N.A. McPherson, in charge
of railway operations, says
the program is not a mayor
one, he says the end result
will be making passsenger
rail travel on the BCR “vas
nice as possible"

Part of the program has
been the recent acquisition
of three Budd cars from the
city of Phitadelphia that will
be primarily used for short
runs between North VWan-
couver and ski areas near
Whistler

McPherson says the cars,
which the American city had
declared surplus to tts needs,
are more commuter-suited
than they are to the longer
runs the railway makes

While BC Rail isn't
planning major scheduling

changes tor those runs to the
Interior, all Budd cars have
been remotored and are be-
ing rebuilt

“We bought those cars in

about 1956,’" says
McPherson, ‘* and its
amazing how good they still
are.”

Cleaned up and refitied,
he says, tne cars are as
modern looking and as ef-
ficient as railway coaches
anywhere.

The refurbishing project
has seen one car rebuilt at an
Eastern plant and = work
contunuing now on another

at BC. Rail facihues in
Squamish. When _ that's
done, work will start on a
third unit.

Philadelphia — B.C. Rail

now has nine Budd cars
McPherson says no major
changes in the daily service
to Lillooet and _ three-
times-a-week service to
Prince George are planned
