on the heat on the panels B4 - Sanday, March 13, 1983 - North Shore News Of the three major ap- plications for solar heating namely space _ heating, domestic hot water heating and swimming pool heating, swimming pool heating has proven itself to be the most successful and effective use of solar equipment. The three main components for any solar heating system are the collectors, storage tank and circulating pump. The beauty of solar heating a swimming pool is that 2/3 of a solar system already exist. The storage tank is the swimming pool itself and the circulating pump is the filter pump. The heart of a solar system is the solar collector panel which acts as a heat ex- changer and collects the sun's heat and transfers it to the fast flowing pool water that is being pumped through them. The remainder of the system is composed of sensors, automatic controls and valves to turn the system on and off as needed based The solar system should be one which integrates with the existing pumping and filtering system. The solar panels should be constructed of materials which are not subject-—te—-the corrosive qualities of pool water and the system should be designed to provide safety precuations against freezing and air locks. ettective March 7/83 RE LPAGEY REAL ESTATE SERV REAL ESTATE TRAINING How successtul you are or can be as a real esate sales person depends greatly on the company that is benind you Ensure your success by working for a Company that offers the essential backup services is nationwide and that will give you the personalized altention and training you need CONSIDER A.E.LE PAGE 1 Training ts carned out through instrucbon by ful tre protes stonal educators at our traming Centre as well as additonal Practical field training by the branch managers 2 The Manager does not sell JAE Le Page ts Canada 5 largest real estate company You deserve the best opporunty fo be successtul Ab le Page is offering you that oppurtunity want to tafk to you CALL TODAY NORTH VAN Chuck Traunweiser 986 9544 DR. In addition when oxygen is , introduced, as is the case | when solar collectors drain down every night, oxidation in combination with a high velocity of water will erode a metal collector material. In sizing a solar system for a swimming pool many details must be considered such as: 1. Temperature of desired 2. Length of season 3. Size of filter pump 4. Surface area of pool 5. Distance of solar collector from filter pump 6. Wind speed on surface of pool pool --F Wind speed on solar — collectors 8. Onentation of pool and collectors towards south 9. Shading of pool or collectors - As atuate > of — thumbd- the area of the = solar éoliector panel should be 60% to 100% of the swimming pool's surface area assuming a 5 to 6 month swimming season and a water temperature desired of approximately 80°F. For a longer season more solar panels should be used. Before installing = solar equipment it is wise to consult with an expert in the field who has experience in sizing systems in your area. In selecting a suitable solar collector for heating a pool the main things to look for are as follows: 1. Resistance to corrosion (plastic) 2. Large heater pipe (required for high flow of . water) 3. Fully wetted surface area {to maximize efficiency of collector/sq.ft. of collector area) 4. Ease of installation (modular panels) 5. Automatic operation (especially important in the Sun power can save money shoulder seasons — spring and fall) In addition to the solar system it is recommended that pools be insulated at night against heat loss by a pool blanket. This allows for a quicker temperature recovery by the solar system and a longer pool season. The chemical costs are also reduced by using a blanket as the evaporation is greatly reduced. To complete the energy conservation program for your pool we suggest a timer for the circulating pump during the summer months. Think Solar many long swimming seasons of enjoyment in your backyard with a low upkeep cost solar heated pool. Alan Crooks is a_ solar consultant and partner in Solar Centre Lid.
