(lan Smith photo) The abortion con- troversy at Lions Gate Hospital has been responsible for membership of the North and West Vancouver Hospital Society reaching the §,000 mark. This is triple the mem- bership number of something over 1,600 last year, which was in itself a record figure prompted by the abortion issue. Deadline for memberships of anyone wishing to vote in the September 17 election of hospital directors, which is seen by most as the com- munity’s opportunity to show acceptance or con- demnation of abortion continuing to be readily available there, arrived Thursday afternoon. The count showed that more than 3,800 new members had signed up and paid their $6 membership to join the society which is a condition of being able to vote at the annual meeting.
