While we were there, the famous York Minster cathedral was undergoing restoration and a major part of it was closed to the public. The exterior was hidden behind a network of scaffolding, so that we had to be content with pictures. Since our time in York was so brief (that’s what you get for taking a tour!) I asked Barry ‘to fill me in on some of the tourist delights I had missed. “Did you walk through the Shambles?” he asked. We had, fortunately. This is a street of charming shops preserved as they were from the 16th century. But, I must confess, the only thing we bought was a bottle of Canadian rye, for the Outrageous price of $11. The Street itself is pure Elizabethan England, and the shopping is magnificent. If you are inclined t® be a spendthrift, save your visit until late in the day or you'll blow every cent you have! They have a restaurant that serves roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. (Seems a good spot to go, since York .and Yorkshire pud started out in-the same place!) Here again, the decor is 16th century and carefully preserved. “Well, I can't forget “Betty’s Bar,” Barry con- tinued. “During the last war, they had a mirror where the allied troops signed. It’s still there. A good spot - for anyone who served with the forces. to go. When I was there last, the food was just your average pub stuff — nothing special.” Barry also told me about something he called “soggy peas”. It seems to be a speciality of the Yorkshire pubs. Never tried them. Perhaps that’s lucky! I'm about to make a confession that may lose a lot of readers. I LOVE ._MUSEUMS! Give me a bag lunch, a_ notebook, no distractions, and a warm room to come home to — I can be lost for days! My family has threatened to leave me right there among the antiquities and book worms. Well, York has its share of things to pack a lunch for: The Castle Museum has a full street done in Dicken's time. In the same spot, look for the Dungeon which has suits of armor dating back to a lot of “Williams” and “Richards”. Have you ever seen these suits of armor? I did, in the Tower of London especially. Can you believe » how tiny these people were? If you don’t believe me, ask your husband to walk — without stooping — through some of the 16th century doorways in York.
