14 - North Shore News - Friday, June 9. 2000 Gruise for Thwaytes Vashti Singh Contributing Writer THE Land Conservancy of British Columbia (TLC) is hosting a Father's Day Cruise to raise money for the pur- chase of Thwaytes Landing. As part of fundraising efforts, the non-profit group is holding a Father's Dav dadian Arm Dinner Boat Cruise on fune 17. The J9S8Qs classic wood motor vessel wall deave Coal Harbour at p.m. and travel through Indian Arm. The four-hour cruise will give guests a cultural and natural history of Thwaytes Landing, with all proceeds going toward the acquisition of the land. Currently 825,000 has been raised toward the purchase of the area. according to Tamsin Baker, the Lower Mainland regional manager tor TLC. A total $450,000 is needed to pay for the first of five sections of the 130-acre piece of land. OF the TY lots the property is divided into, seven waterfront lots could be purchased on Juiy 14. Over the next two years, TLC will work with other interested parties to purchase and protect the area. By 2002 the organization is nlanning to have cornpletely boughe our the pri- vately owned Jand for a total of $2.2 million. Once the all the lots are bought the Jand wiil be used as a public area, although Baker said, “exactly what that means yet we're nor entirely sure.” She said the group will be meet- ing with various organizations to determine future use. The group wants to ensure that no further development will take place on this land. Preservation of the area will protect it for outdoors and wildlife enthusiasts alike. TLC is also placing emphasis on guar- antecing the natural habitat of the area because it provides a home ro a variety of birds and animals, including black bears. There are well-marked trails through the forested area which houses water- falls, rocky outcrops and Indian Arm viewpoints. As well, there are three year-round streams. The area is situated between Mount Seymour Provincial Park and the newly created Indian Arm Provincial Park. Tickers for the cruise are $100 per guest and available by calling TLC at 733-2313.
