Gl Bob Mackin News Reporter Gans N’ Roses — Live Era 87-93 (Geffen) kkk /The Clash wkK)/2 — From Here To Eternity Lire (Epic) The °80s weren't so bad after all. Rock and roll fans had it pretty good back then —eN because The Clash and Guns N’ Roses both were at their peak. These bands were prod- ucts of their environment more than the artistic vision of their members. The Clash grew out of the mid-’70s punk rack revolution in London as a snarling oudet for disaffected youth who were smothered in the wake of the hippy dippy °60s. Hollywood's Guns N Roses were the rigt. band for the greedy ’80s: loud, obnoxious and excessive. The Clash’ debuted in 1977 with a seli-tided album. and became big in America in 1986. The quartet toured with The Who and played their own stadium and arena concerts as headliners. Co- leader Mick Jones left in 1983 to form Big Audio Dynamite, leaving Joe Strummer to head the band until 1986. Thankfully, tapes were rolling at gigs between 1978 and 1982. Who would’ve guessed it would take until the end of the next century for them co see the light of day? The 17- track single-disc is sequenced faithfully to a real Clash con- cert set list and the date and venue of each track is record- ed in the liner notes. A wel- come dose of honesty comes in the form of disclosure that instrumental overdubs were made on two songs captured in 1978, “London's Burning” and “What’s My Name”. Technical deficiencies needed repair, Instead of a history fes- sor: for the unaware, the liner notes consist of endless testi- monials on the band’s superi- onity from anonymous fans, - As the Clash faded away in the mid-’80s, Guns N* Roses toe. a assl — Sprout were taking over and taking rock in a different, much less- political direction. Guns N’ Roses (a.k.a. Drugs N* Booze) rode the crest of the heavy metal and giam rock rebirth, complete with big hair and mascara. Just Say No and political correctness weren't part ef the vocabulary of Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff'and Steve. The headline-grabbing volatili- ty of the band members fed io the group's eventual downfall. By the mid-’90s, the revolving door revolved no more. Only singer Axi Rose was left. Lire Era slams the door on Guns N® Roses, mark I, with 22 of the band’s five mainstays. The quality of production and playing varies, “Paradise City” and “Welcome to the Jungle” sound as fresh as the first ame 1 heard them, bur “Patience”, the only palatable ballad, is spoiled by crowd noise and poor live engincering. Unlike the Clash, it seems Gw’R has a future: Rose has enlisted a new group of back- ing musicians, including ex- Replacements’ bassist Tommy Stinson, to relaunch the band in 2000. The classic Apperite for Destruction, a 20-million selier released in 1987, has been re-recorded and a new set of tunes called Chinese Democracy awaits release this year. Bi wrk & Neko Case and Her Boyfriends — Furnace Room Lullaby (Mint). Just when you thought all the great country songs were written, Neko Case returns. The sophomore effort from Cascadia’s country sweetheart is destined to be on more than a few top 10 lists by the end of 2000. But you'll have to wait until it’s released Feb. 22 te hear what the fuss is about (or be lucky enough to borrow a copy trom a friendly music critic in the meantime).
