meets in NORTH VANCOUVER women will be among the women from all over the country attending the Ca- nadian Federation of University Women’s national conference be- ing held in Ottawa next month. The local representatives are members of the federation’s North Vancouver branch, which meets every second Thursday in Edge- mont Village’s Highlands United Church. Topics to be discussed at the na- tional conference, which is held every three years, include pensions for women seniors and day care. The federation — formerly call- ed the University Women’s Club — is an international organization of women university graduates committed to education and par- ticipation in all aspects of com- munity fife. “We are not limited to women’s issues at all,’ said North Van- couver membership secretary Cecilia Doborzynfki. _ Although the local group has in the past focused on issues such as the pornography laws, aging in Ottawa women and the National Action Committee, speakers also cover a variety of cultural, political and social topics. Members also form smaller in- terest groups. Some of these in- clude bridge, investment, com- munity affairs, creative writing, art appreciation, education study group and conversational French. New interest groups evolve as ideas are put forward. The branch — which last year had a membership of 76 women — is holding its first meeting of the 1988-89 year tomorrow, Sept. 8. The guest speaker will be from the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technolcgy. Women who hold an accredited Canadian or recognized foreign university degree and are interested in becoming new members are welcome to attend. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the social room of Highlands United Church, 3255 Edgemont Blvd. For further in- formation, call Doborzynfki at 985-8894. Join women’s chorus IF YOU'RE looking to put a song in your heart, now’s the time to join the Sweet Adelines, a women-only barbershop-styte chorus. The group meets every Wednes- day, starting today, at 7:45 p.m. in Highlands United Church. The local Dogwood chapter includes members from North and West Vancouver. Chorus member Irene Kristen says there are currently 30 choristers, and they are always TOM HURRELL looking for new faces. The group sings at seniors homes, in malls at Christmas and at dinner dances. The Dogwood chapter also includes quartets made uf of the members. Kristen says the group placed second in the small chorus catego- ry of the Sweet Adelines Western Regional Competitions held in Calgary in May.
