Doug Collins TED White has scored a “first” in the House of Commons. ‘The North Vancouver | MP has speared Liberal hypocrisy on racial discrimination as it affects white f males. He has also - demanded an end to it. ‘His speech was made dur- ing the last week of May but I’ve seen not the slightest reference {o it in the major . media even though press releases were issued. That's 4. where things are at these “days. But it carried in The Ottawa Times, a small news- paper, under the headline “Reverse Racism Targeted.” . The major media didn’t- want to know about it, being too busy hunting “racists” of a different kind. And the Liberals sat on their hands and whistled. White. proposed that Parliament get rid of affirma- tive action, which has become a cornerstone of Liberal policy. He did it in the form of a private mem- ber’s motion so it was “non- votable.” And when he asked for consent to make it votable his request was denied. As he told the House, Section 15 (1) of the Constitution Act “enunciates the principles of equality as called for in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” It states, “Every individ- ual is equal before the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimi- nation and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex. age or mental or physical disability.” The authors of Section 15 should have left it at that, said White. But that wouldn't have been politically correct. So they made sure that peo- ple who were “disadvan- taged” were exempted. (Meaning, of course. ‘posed to indians, the minorities, and anyone else some vole-hun- gry politician, bureaucrat or human rights maniac was fond of.) As White pointed out, it was George Orwell's Animal Farm all over again, with some animals being more equal than others. It was also “a travesly of democriat- ic princi- ples,” and procedures that are sup- encourage equality end up as engines of discrimination. The victims being whites, especially young white males. It is now almost routine for them to be discriminated against, both provincially and federally. : White mentioned the case of Timothy Juliette, who grad- uated form a civil aviation mechanical engineering course with near-perfect marks. Oe a's lost horizons In spite of that he was denied entry to a Department of Transport training course because he was not a mem- ber of a disadvantaged group. “The worst thing,” White continued, “is that some of the most vocul of the pro- moters of affirmative action are so blinded with ideology 66 It is a mistake, too, to believe that only whites can be ‘racist.’ 9 er that they will not or cannot see how intolerant, bigoted and extremist their demands really are.” As some sage put ita long time ago, “The road to tyranny is paved with human rights.” It is a mistake, too, to believe that only whites can be “racist.” I have given instances in the past where whites have been discrimi- nated against in the private job market, let alone in gov- ernment and crown corporu- tions. But no political party as such raises the issue. It was significant that White did it in a private member's motion. {i was entirely pre- dictable, too, that the Liberals would not agree to pul White's motion to a vote. As he stated: “Tam sure the Liberals wish they could com- pletely censor this motion. | do-not doubt some would suppress free speech in this place if they could.” Yes, Last year, Liberal House Leader Peter Milliken said that members who “abuse” freedom of speech should have their phones dis- connected or Icse pay. I wish I could be less gloomy about the prospects facing this country in issues 8 Our Superior Series (Queen, 1500 coil with wool) at the same su retail price 3s of this sort, But the writing is on the wall. The mainspring in anti- white discrimination is inimi- gration and no MP dares to attack head-on the kind of immigration we ure getting. Not even Ted White, who does more than most Opposition MPs to bring some common sense into the Commons, nor Reform’s Art Hanger, the best immigration critic Canada had in 40 years until Preston Manning dumped him. Anyone who did face the issue squarely would himself out of the Reform caucus in a trice, just like Bob Ringma, David Chatters and Jan Brown, who were thrown out on lesser matters. Call it Canada’s Lost Horizons. The North Shore News believes strongly in freedom of speech and the right of all sides in a debate to be heard. The columnists published in the News present differing points of view, but those views are not necessarily those of the newspaper itself. © 2 YOU!
