Dr. G: As a veterinarian, | deal with
the effects of the “human-animal
bond" on a daily basis. People form
deep, complex bonds with their pets
that should not be taken lightly.

The relationship between a pet and
its owner has many similarities to a
mother for all the necessities of life.
Pets also need their owners to feed
and shelter them, to groom them, to
provide health care, and to offer
affection. Though a child grows and
eventually leaves the nest, a pet
does not.

Pets can play the role of children,
best friends, partners and confi-

dants. Owners can tell t.sir pets
their problems and receive on criti-
cism. Pets accept their owners
regardless of appearances, feel-
ings, or behaviors. Pets provide a
constant presence in the turbulent
and stresstut lives of their owners.
Most importantly, pets offer uncon-
ditional love. It's little wonder that
pet owners who lose their four-
legged friends feel profoi:rd grief.

Cats with diabetes or kidney failure
produce excessive volumes of
urine. They feel the need to empty
their bladders frequently, so they
may not make it to the litterbox (or
outside) in time. Cats with bladder
crystals or bladder infections will
also urinate frequently, almost
urgently due to the intense irritation
caused by these conditions.

If your cat suddenly starts peeing in
the house, the first step is to have
him and a sample of his urine
examined. if a medical problem is
present and correctable, your cat's
housetraining habits will probably
return to normal.
