Night Out
to help in
war against
local crime

AUG. 2 is National Night Out
and North Shore neighbor-
hvods are invited to partici:
pate.

The program began in the U.S.
to help raise awareness of local
community policing programs and
the responsibility of citizens to get
involved in crime prevention,

On the North Shore, National
Night Out is intended as a positive
way for citizens to meet their local
police and see the variety of ser-
vices and progranis available to
them. Recognition is also given to
the community contributions of the
many volunteers in programs such
as Block Watch.

This year the Block Watch Area
coordinators of the North Shore
asked that Nationa! Night Out con-
sist of individual block parties.
Block Watch participants will be
organizing pot-luck barbecues,
street or block dances or simply
chatting with neighbors.

The event is not funded, so
Block Watch will rely on the good-
will of sponsors, North Vancouver
RCMP Block Watch members are
soliciting support from the commu-
nity, including the purchase of
sparklers for participants to light at
9:30 p.m. to signify the united
stand the North Vancouver com-
munity has taken against crime.
