The vehicles were released to their owners as a result of a B.C. Supreme Court interpleader hearing on April 5 concerning a used-auto fraud case involving Uniglobe Auto Brokers. The company once had an office near Bewicke Avenue and Marine Drive in North Vancouver. North Vancouver resident Leah Zavaglia, 21. was one of 24 car owners entangled in the scheme locally. “Lm not accepting any post- dated cheques again. That’s a biz- gie.” said Zavaglia on Thursday from somewhere on Annacis Island while the News helped fer jump- start her 1984 Jaguar in the pouring rain. “Pim very fortunate to get my car back. Is stil for sale.” said Zavaglia who was given nwo worth- fess cheques for $10,000 (postdat- ed) and $300 for her car last fall. The Uniglobe scheme, estimated to be worth $5 million nationwide, saw carowners issued with postdar- ed cheques in exchange for trans- ferting car ownership to Uniglobe, according to North Vancouver RCMP fraud investigator Const. Craig Duffin. Duffin said Uniglobe office staff called people selling their vehicles in the Auto Trader magazine and offered payment close to the asking prices. “A tot of the people really want- ed to sell their cars. Some of them had their cars in the Aue Trader for two months without a nibble,” said Duffin. He said police received Uniglobe complaints about one month alter the operation began last fall.
