ClO -Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1981 North-Shere-News - Oo OUr And hello to a catalogue By TERRY LAVENDER Pat Rich, who numbers among his many other functions at this paper the title of Wine Editor, will no longer be part of the North Shore News scenery after this week. Pat’s wine columns ap- peared infrequently at best -but were always interesting, highly amusing and _ in- formative. (He certainly impressed others. at the ~ office with his knowledge of wines and liquor!) His departure will leave the News a little worse off, but we wish him well in whatever he does next, and hope he will sample many more wines in his time. Those of us who follow will have to muddle through as best we can. One of the things which makes wine buying somewhat frustrating and perilous is the lack of in- formation available to the consumer. Row _ upon row. of bottles rise up to greet the unwary person who saunters down to the local liquor store to pick up a bottle for dinner. After examining thousands of confusing bottles in rising frustration The winner of our recipe contest this week is Mrs. F. Foxcroft with her recipe for Pickled Onions. Ms. Fox- croft wins a voucher for $10 worth of meat Of her choice from THE TOWN BUT- CHER LTD., 1254. Lynn Valley Rd., North Van- couver. You could be our next winner. Send your favorite recipe to the North Shore News Recipe Contest, No. 202-1139 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver, B.C. V7M 2H4_. The Liquor Distribution Branch's Product Catalogue is designed, according to the food last week (you know, the stuff that tasted like overripe lettuce) because it’s the only wine one recognizes. Well of course’ the ultimate answer to. the problem of choosing wines is * experience (drink lots of wine!) but while gaining that experience two recent publications, one from the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch and the other from the Italiaw government's Italian Wine Centre, should come in handy. The Italian Wine Guide RECIPE WINNER lis Is pickling same time of day). (Gilbey's arfait Parfait Crepe Suzette if you must _know. It costs $9.45 for a .710 litre bottle and tastes like an alcoholic orange pop drink.) The product catalogue is available free in all government liquor stores and can be identified by the smiling old gent on the front showing a bottle of wine to a sophisticated-looking _ busi- nessman, while a woman gazes in bemusement at rows upon rows of rye and a workman buys a case of beer. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice cover and the catalogue is very handy indeed, though it dates very quickly. The Liquor Distribution Branch plans to update it every month. Besides listing every liquor product and store in B.C., the catalogue also includes helpful information about wines, including definitions, a sweetness’ chart, wine glasses and what food to serve with what wine. The wines themselves are listed according to type and country (region in France’s case). Information is given on size (in litres), alcohol content, sweetness and price. The catalogue also in- cludes a speciality section, with generally more pricey wines that are usually available only at specialty stores. To find the location of these stores, consult the catalogue, it describes the types of stores, their hours, and their location. You can have a bit of fun with the catalogue as well. For instance, test your knowledge with a trivia quiz featuring such questions as “What is the most expensive (or cheapest) product: eX Bie bal | Bo BEBE | BEGESEEEEER Csuenter’s brings a world of pood taste to your table Sweet delights.
