was sentenced to 14 days
impnsonment Wednesday
for what Judge J.B. Paradis
called an act of “mindless
violence.”

Joerg Rothberger pleaded
guilty to mischief in North
Vancouver Provincial Court
after breaking a glass door at
the Coachhouse Inn on May
12.

Crown Counsel Deidre
Pothecary told the court that
Rothberger was in the lobby
of the Coachhouse making a
phone call at about 8:50

She said that after making
the call, he woke up his
fnend who was asleep drunk
on a couch, picked up a case
of beer and headed for the
door.

Pothecary said that he
kicked the door, smashing it
and causing $186 worth of
damage.

Rothberger said that he
only put his foot against the
door, to open it, and that his
foot went nght through.

“This is glaringly a
situation of mindless
violence,” Judge J.B. Paradis
told Rothberger.

He said Rothberger
showed “an inability to
control a mindless blast of
anger.”

“It is becoming far too
easy for people to casually
assume that vandalism, or
violence without any real
basis, will be ignored by the
court.”

He sentended Rothberger
to 14 days imprisonment,
placed him on probation for
one year and ordered him to
pay for the damage.

Paradis said he hoped the
sentence would act as a
deterrent to Rothberger and
any of his fnends.
