A FEMALE employee of a North Vancouver business was assaulted and had her purse — con- taining a day’s worth of business income — stolen ne DSay CORRECTION: plans 250 jobs PINE CORPORATION iS requesting zoning amendments that would allow it to bring a 250 employee scientific research Operation to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver City. The research would mainly concern the field of conifer waste and seek to find useful ways of using the wood and leaves or ‘‘slash’’ left by log- ging operations for useful purposes. Research along these lines has been done at UBC, but Pine Corp. wants to go fur- ther, particularly with the idea of using slash waste to create medicines and dif- ferent forms of alcohol. ‘The research is not com- plicated and no caustic chemicals are involved,’’ claimed Jack Merner, who appeared on behalf of Pine Corp., before council on Monday. Merrier likened the process to the use of a blender on the slash, leaving liquids and biomass behind. “It’s a brand new opera- tuon and it will be a big challenge to find all of the people we need: lab techni- cians, computer program- mers, librarians, etc., But time is of the essence,’’ Mer- ner siad. Pine Corp. must spend $36 million on research in its first year and that is why it seeks speedy support from council. Frank Morris of Property and Licensing agreed, adding that city staff would require more details and answers to questions. Pine Corp. plans to go beyond research and begin developing machinery and manufacturing the new slash by-products. But this would not take place at the Lonsdale Quay site. In fact, most of the procedures would occur in the forest after logging. Other projects that Pine Corp. might be involved in include the development of a smokeless log-fuel for another country and _ elec- trolitic mining (extraction of minerals from sea water). Ald. Ralph Hall made the motion for approval in prin- ciple, backed up by Ald. John Braithwaite. ‘‘We certainly welcome this new industry ... it’s a new type of industry to B.C., and that’s what we’re looking for,’? added Ald. Frank Marcino. 2-piece UNDRY ‘e 1 CENTRE | Hi la ay ‘ Washer & Dryer ons stack lor less t - space requires no 1 | venting and uses ordinary 110 volt : | wiring { PRICED TOO LOW TO ADVERTISE!
