And for young people who may have had a few hard knocks in life, the task could be almost impossible. It was a knowledge of the effects that led- the Ministry of Human Resources to create, among other things, a week long’ wilderness canoeing expedition for some of these young people between the ages of 12-18. Now before anyone starts claiming that it’s just another hair-brained scheme to waste taxpayers’ money, they should realize that this particular program could be one of the key methods of establishing in many of these young people a new and disciplined approach to setting up their lives. Working under the name of Western Wilderness _Encounter Society, they opened their doors on Monday on Esplanade in North Vancouver with an eight week plan designed to help certain youngsters on the road to establishing their future. As part of the eight weeks, one week includes a canoe trip in the wilderness to help bring the youngsters together and to create a feeling of unity and discipline among them = as well as the wilderness ex- penence. At the present referrals to the program come to the organization through social workers in the time. all Ministry of Resources. Each of the eight week sessions will involve nine or 10 young people. According to Sharon Evers and David Bischoff who run the local program, they are responsible for an area which takes in the North Shore, Lower Mainland, Natural Squamish, up River, Sechelt Coola. The experienced pair expect most of the referrals to be out of work, or drop- outs who seem to be having problems becoming established. in the main- stream of working life. When they return they will then work with the = in- structors in counselling, filling out job applications, investigating the work world, or for some, there will be help in returning to school. During the time they are in the pfogram, they will receive an allowance from the Ministry.
