How does it. affect you? Are all the stories I've heard just at- tention-getting devices (like a way to show off world- traveller status)? by Barbara McCreadie Answer: Jet-lag is caused by travelling through a number of time zones too quickly for your body to adjust to the change. We all experience a taste of it when we switch from regular time to daylight saving and back again. The clock may say 7 a.m. but your body says, “Damn lie -I - know it’s only six.” It takes a few days to trick yourself into stopping waking-up in the middle of the night or falling asleep over lunch. Side effects can include changes in bowel habits, menstrual changes and reversed food cravings (the gal who never cats breakfast may devour her weight in scrambled eggs and gag on the steak for dinner). Now, here comes the part that everyone fights about. I find it much easier to adjust when I travel from West to East (Canada TO Europe). When I return home, I spend up to two weeks banging my typewriter at five a.m. and boring everyone with snores at suppertime. A cruise-ship doctor just told me he finds it much easicr going the other way. Two things Ive found complicate the thing: Overeating on flights and having too many drinks aboard. Indigestion and a hang-over will do you in! It is wise not to schedule any high-powered negotiations for the first two days upon arrival in any far- away place. Believe me, your brain is in neutral and your mouth in high gear. How to cope? Well, I don't believe in sleeping pills at any time and even less on flights. I prefer morning flights to evening, given a choice simply because I find I work my tail off all day and am exhausted by cvening. Dear Barbara: Give me an idea about packing a travel-sack for my 10-year old granddaughter. She will be flying alone to Britain for Christmas to join her parents who stationed in Africa. Allison has been living with me for a year and I hate to part with her but since my daughter and her husband will now be able to provide her with a good home and education there, I'm losing her. I want her flight to be a pleasant experience. Answer: My girls have all loved leather purses and I've found that too much cCarry-on baggage is headache for kids on their own. Things that I would suggest for my own children, travelling with me, are unsuitable for an ‘unaccompanied child. You will know Allison's interests. Does she read? If WAIKIKI $369 8 Days, 7 Nighta.
