16 — Friday, February 1, 1991 - North Shore News to prevent accidents THE B.C. Burn Awareness Week begins Feb. 3 through Feb. 9 and the District of North Vancouver Fire Department wants you [to have a burn-free life. Fire and burn-related incidents are a leading cause of ac- cidental death. Burns don’t discriminate. More than 35 per cent of the injuries and deaths are children. Recent research lists burn-related deaths as a leading cause of accidental death in children under 14, with the highest risk group listed as those under two years of age. Seventy-five per cent of all burns result from the victim's own actions. In the over-70 age group, 75 per cent of these burns involve flame burns [frequently associated with cooking, smoking and the use of matches. Seventy-five to 80 per cent of burn injuries occur at home. A recent study revealed that more than 90 per cent of microwave oven owners have been burned to varying degrees, many of which are never reported, and more than 75 por cent of homes now have microwaves. Hot water and scalding liquids are an ever increasing cause of burn injuries today. For example, HOT TIPS North Vancouver District Fire Department tap water heated to an excess of 54°C (130°F) can cause or pro- duce burns in seconds. Liquids spilled in the kitchen account for a large percentage of buras to adults and children. In 1978-79, statistics indicated that one out of 40 children started a fire with a cigarette lighter — by 1986 that number was one in nine. Eighty-five per cent of homes now have smoke detectors, but only 50 per cent of these are operational due to either removal of batteries or non-functioning batteries. Another frequent occurrence relates to young children playing with or sucking on live extension and or other electrical cord. The mouth is involved in approximate- ly 66 per cent of the cases and most of the victims are between six and 36 months of age. As you can see from these statistics, we have a seious burn problem that must be addressed. The solution begins with you — being more careful in your every- day habits around the home. Be aware of all possible areas in the home where burns may occur and keep children clear of these possi- ble disasters in the home.
