BUSINESS BRIEFS GRAIN RECORD CP RAIL has set a new record for the month of June for export grain moved by rail from Canada’s three Prairie provinces to the Port of Vancouver. The record of 925,761 tonnes, made up of the six. major grains of wheat — barely, oats, rye, flax and canola — surpassed the old record of 816,570 tonnes set in 1988. Fred Schultz, manager of grain transportation for CP Rail, said 10,728 railears. of grain were delivered to. North Shore and Vancouver terminals in June. He added that if the grain cars delivered to the port for the month of June were placed together as one train, the train would stretch for over 200 kilometres: “To set the record required precision planning, which included moving trains from originating stations on the Prairies directly to the Port of Vancouver, stopping only to change crews,’’ said - Schultz. “Setting the. record was a challenge. But most satisfying was “our ability once again to clearly demonstrate to the industry and the regulators that we are a dependable, customer-sensitive transportation choice.” ‘ CP Rail used. mostly — solid 1}2-car trains measuring almost two kilometres to move the grain. Mid-train’ power, or robot units, a concept developed by CP Rail, aided in moving the trains, each of which carried about 10,000 tonnes. SHAW CABLE .
