It is going to be expensive. Before we knee-jerk into one proposa! or the other let’s make sure aif the alterna- tives are on the table. For instance: We propose a tunnel crossing of First Narrows, from the south foot of Capifano Road direct to the north foot _ of Howe and Hornby streets. - Such a crossing has yet to be includ- ed on the list of possibilities, but it would have many benefits and few drawbacks: .,_ 1. Only about 50% of Lions Gate ‘traffi ic is. North Shore traffic. A ... Capilano Road..comnection: would allow this non-local traffic to flow eas- = ily’ anid from the Upper Levels high- way and eliminate a great deal of Marine Drive congestion. 2. A connection to Howe and Hornby streets will channel the traffic through downtown Vancouver in the least disruptive way and help to climi- nate the bottlenecks at the other end. 3. If the Squamish band does not like the idea, the tunnel could begin at Marine Drive. 4. It will cause minimal disruption to existing traffic while it is being built. 5. It will not alter the world-famous profile of the existing bridge, and it will completely spare Stanley Park. _ We owe it to ourselves to make sure that aif reasonable proposals are exam- ined, and none rejected out of hand. The one outlined above has never, to our knowledge, been proposed before. a GIOBaL BaN ON LANDINGS.
