Davies Pharmacy. 1401 St. Georges 985-8771 ~ 45 SENIORS Be ready for a crisis MANY of us may remember the Scouts’ slogan “Be Prepared.” When we were younger, this meant that we should be able to look after ourselves if we were lost in the woods, or got into trouble on or in the water. Nowadays, all of us — and seniors in particular — need to make sure that we can look after ourselves in our homes, our cars, oF anywhere in the community. We've all heard thar we can expect an’ earthquake, “The Big One,” to occur in our region at some: time in the future. Because. British Columbia sits on a constantly moving system of rocks that is part of the earth’s crust, we experience earthquakes almost every day, often offshore. scene On the North Shore we don’t’ usually notice these quakes, but we could have a stronger one at any time. And we may also experience other emergency situations such as floods, wind storms or powcr outages. It’s important for every resident, including seniors, to prepare ourselves: ahead of time to be able to cope with these unexpected problems. Because many older people live in apartment buildings, it is especially necessary for us to be able to manage on our own if an emergency occurs. Several years ago, a member of Lionsview" 's board of directors was caught in a difficult situa- tion when, due to a serious traffic accident, his 16-storey _ apartment block was without ~ electricity for. several hours. Some residents were marooned in their apartments, others on the main floor, unable to use elevators and with no lights or stoves. Because of this and other similar experiences, Lionsview decided to hold a meeting for the residents of this building, where a volunteer from the North and West Vancouver Emergency Program spoke to us about how to prepare our- © selves for a possible earthquake or other emergency. _He said that individuals should plan to look after themselves for at least three days, since, in a seri-.; ous situation, the emergency. fire and ambulance services. ‘ would have to concentrate on helping people . with _ major - problems. Here ‘are’ some of the” things that we should ail have ‘North | Shore in our homes, apartments and cars: @ water — at least 12 litres in a sealed container; non-perishable food, canned or dry, and a can opener; Ba flashlight with extra batter- ies; @ an AM/FM battery-pow- ered radio — again with extra batteries; @ essential medications and supplies, including copies of prescriptions for glasses and medicines; @ a small “space blanket” or other cover. All of these items should be kept-in a bag in a secre place, preferably in your car and under your bed, One last impo. tant item to have in your home is a pair of. sturdy shoes, again, under your bed, so that if you have to get up in a hurry you will be able to avoid being hurt by broken glass or other debris. - There are many more sug- gestions for coping with an: carthquake or other emer- gency.
