The memorabilia will feature gum cards, pro- grams, autographs, equip- ment and a myriad of other collectables. Sports collecting is the fastest growing hobby in North America. A decade ago there were fewer than five thousand collectors: to- day the number is estimated at half a million. With the in- creased demand for older memorabilia, prices have soared. A 1952 gum card of Mickey Mantel fetched $25.00 in 1973. Today it sells for a thousand dollars. Pete Rose’s card from his rookie season of 1963 was worth one issued twenty years ago. Five years ago it was worth two dollars. With Rose ap- proaching Ty Cobb’s career mark for base hits, Rose’s stock has risen. His rookie card now sells for $400! The November 12 conven- tion is open to the general public. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. Admission is $1.00. Collec- tors and non collectors are in- vited to bring their stashes of cards and allow the hundreds of collectors and dealers to compete for their collections.
