The Captain George Vancouver Society has just the project in
mind: 2_180-foot_ schooner named in honour of George
* Vancouver; the man who accompanied Captain James Cook on
| his voyage around the world between 1772 and.1774.

In 1791 he was sent on a mission to accept the surrender of the
post at- Nootka Sound in present-day B.C. He was also

and our diesel trucks. We also need it for our shipping industry,”
Rowntree said.

The Captain George Vancouver Socizty is in the carly stages of
building a membership base and spreading the word on the pro-
ject. Rowntree has becn looking for a site to build the ship since
ia January of this year.

“There are lands with the port authority under federal juris-
diction that [ have to pursue on the North Shore. I¢ docsn’t have
to be immediately on the waterfront,” she said.

The ship construction project w ould re aire 2 plot of land 100
ft. by 200 ft. (9.3x18.6 sq, m) for the working area.

The society is also secking the funding necessary to bring the
plan to fruition. It would need to raise about $2 million to ger the
job done.

Lions Bay resident Capt. Alex Brigola, 66, would lead the con-

smrection of the tall ship. The Capt. George Vancouver would be
based ana schooner design from 1802.

Fraser joins race

THE race for the West Vancouver mayor’s chair is
getting crowded,

Along with incumbent Mayor
Par Boname, incumbent council-
for Ron Wood, and former coun-
cillor Andy Danyliu, incumbent
councillor Russ Fraser is entering
the fray.

Fraser is “delighted” by the
response he’s drummed up
recently with his rallying cry to
widen the fanes in the Stanley Park
causeway, and says that if elected hz would be “a full- -time mayor.

“We need a strong hand to guide the new council and rivati-
agement staff,” he said, “I intend to do that so well thar we
restore confidence in the administration. I obviously think Pm
the best candidate, otherwise I wouldn’t be running.”

Fraser said public confidence in West Vancouver council had
been waning recently, especially after the release of the Cuff
report — suggesting incompetent management — last year.
