T penned a column some- time ago about how unique we all are, as a result of which we are motivated dif- ferently. It started out with a para- ble: A scorpion was travelling across land when he came upon a stream. Not being able to swim he approached a frog and asked him if he would con- sider offering a lift by climb- ing on his back while the frog waded across the body of water, The frog looked at the scorpion with caution: “If I carry you on my back how do T know you won "rt sting, me and kill me?” The scorpion said that he wouldn't be foolish enough to do that because if he stung the trog, he too would drown and die. This made sense to the frog so the scorpion hopped on and off they set. About half way across the There’s a real alternative to the. high cost of dealer service. I’m convinced the person who believes thar everything in moderation is appropriate, can probably live thac lifestyle because he or she is most comfortable with that attitude. There are also those that feel everything in moderation — including moderation — is more their lifestyle and this will often be retlected in the sports they most enjoy. Right at the end of the seale are the people who believe thar anything worth doing is worth overdoing and you will often find these individuals spending their sporting lives immersed in very demanding physical challenges like the fronman- Triathion or other ultra endurance events. The point is nor to get involved in a sport or pas- time for fitness if it doesn’t mirror your own sense of yourself, Decide on the level of energy you are really com- fortable expending on a reg- ular basis and start from that point. For some, it may be three aerobics workouts per week - ora five km run mixed up with a little weight training. Others will need a more chal- lenging goal i in order to get their “fix” and that’s just fine. If you do adopt this con- thing in moderati cept in your training vou are much more likely to make the commitment a life-long habit and are going to enjoy the journey as much as or more than the goal itself. It’s interesting to note that individuals who start out with moderate goals often leapfrog into more and more demanding events until they finally arrive at the level most suited to their physiological and psycholetical state. Wherever you are on this emotional jadder is irrele- vant. What matters is that you are aware of your threshold and that you get involved with a program that will enhance and build your health and wellness rather than breaking it down. And on a closing note, it may be worth reminding ourselves that people get most tired when standing around doing nothing! ~~ Shane Collins is a physi- cal trainer and athletic conch as well asan accomplished ultra endurence runner and marathon svinuner.
