Seymour park Martin Millerchip News Reporter martin@unsnews.com NORTH Shore residents could be camping in their own back yard as early as this fall. That's if B.C. Parks approves the construction of a proposed campground in) Mount Seymour Prowncia park in its 1999 budger. North Vancouver District Couneil voted unani- mously Monday to forward a fetter in support of the campground concept to the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks. The campground concept calls for 62 tent sites located west of Mount Seymour Road approxi- marely 600 m (2,000 ft.) above the gate to the park. The site would sit across the Old Buck Trail on sloping terrain that coniains at least one small creek. Showers, ceffets and a gas fireplace are envis- aged as the only on-site amenities. Because of the cut-and-fill necessary on the site, construc- tion costs are estimated at $} million Coun. Trevor Carolan asked district staff to investigate the possibility of a municipal campground in September 1997, but staff recommended that the provincial campsite would fulfil the same need. District park planner Susan Rogers said the propased site is bordered by district. property (Mountain Forest) which could provide land for future expansion of the facility. Former district councillor Jim Cuthbert, who works for the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, cautioned council that funding for the Mount Seymour campsite had ver to be approved. The province has committed to increasing the number of camping sites in B.C. by 1,500 (tent sites) but has a fixed budget to work with. Cuthbert warned that the cost for the Mount Seymour campground “is somewhat higher than others in the province” and that other sites might provide more tent spaces for the dollars. However, council hopes the fact that no other site is as close to a major urban centre like Vancouver will balance the equation, Ifapproved, construction of the campground could rake as little as three months. An archeological study has already been undertaken to contirm that no significant First Nations archeological fea- tures are located at the proposed site. Rogers said Mount Sevmour provineial park is not tied to ongoing treaty negotiations. A decision by B.C. Parks on its funding priorities for this year is expected in March. Council agreed to circulate its fecter to North Vancouver City and West Vancouver District councils in the hope of fur- ther support. $ COMPARE m9 99" sto Mcwdes: solid pine safe ted frame, tripe face core faten. scauch-qarded [cae caves, pillows and edlew covers, Whntequeahies st 267 E.
