40- Sunday, April 26, 1998 — North Shore News - Dundarave pub - proposal studied West Van to form a pub committee Catherine Barr Contributing Writer JOHN Wiechold’s bid to bring a pub to the Dundarave neighbor- hood will first depend on the decision of a new pub committee and a policy review. Dundarave is changing. Last summer, one of the area’s largest. buildings underwent extensive’ renovations. This summer, even more develop- “mentis planned. But while the - upgrades: may prove to be ” . good for business in the long . Tun, some area merchants have : had to figure our new ways to survive, “John and Jinny Wiechold have ‘operated the Dundarave *Caferin West Vancouver since’ 1988... ~. Helping him revamp the restaurant will be well-known Vancouver restaurateur David Vance. Vance’s long history and experience with restau- rants includes The Cannery, Earl’s, Mulvaney’s and the recently completed Cardero’s. According to Wiechold, he is the perfect person to help with this project. Wicchold recently devel- oped a brochure which out- lines his business intentions and answers questions about the proposed licence change. In the brochure he says he is committed to maintaining Dundarave’s old-world style while keeping up with the eco- nomic revitalization. While Wiechold has been successfully gaining support, not everyone is convinced that his licence change would be for the better. The loudest complaints have come from area residents who live behind the restaurant on Haywood Avenue. In their letters to council they say they are fearful that the proposed licence change could increase noise and traffic while decreasing their proper- ty values. ©. “A pub in this neighbor- hood will inevitably draw peo- ple from other areas, intent upon drinking and getting drunk (and) we do not want this,” states one of several let- ters submitted to council. - - Wiechold thinks their fears. are unfounded and says area residents will hardly notice the _ Monday. change. “We've been serving alcohol for 10 years in a responsible manner and there’s no reason to believe we are going: to do otherwise in- the future,” he said. West Vancouver pub policy states that. “council will con- sider in a public hearine one pub site in cach commercial areas of Ambleside, of Dundarave (and) of Horseshoe Bay.” According to council reports, Dundarave was delet- ~~ ed from the policy in 1984. No one seems to know why. Mayor Pat Boname said she will name nwo councillors to the pub committee on The committee will talk to the business association and residents and review the results. She said it should take approximately 30 days to review the policy and return the results to council. When asked if she thinks a neighborhood pub is a good idea, she said she would Se - “interested in giving it a try. “They (the Dundarave merchants) are very concerned about the lack of business and they want some kind of better plan to attract customers,” said Boname. She said she appreciates just how difficult it is to run a successful business these days, but she also: understands the need to look at the overall pic- ture objectively. “Dundarave -is a . place where you can enjoy shop- - ping, so T would like to see it : corae back to life.” / Violence Prevention ~ Award 1997 — know: someone who has made a’ iffe nce towards violence.’ * violence; ‘@ development of strategies to So adds prevention ‘in.
